STROBED

A place to see a few photos and a few words about Sydney art exhibitions when you can't get there yourself. Or when you want to see photos of yourself on the internet.

Wish You Were Here – Trevor King @ 48 Little Oxford

8:40pm Thursday night, wandering innocently up the hill to Taylor Square after the epic Motion/Pictures pop-up we noticed a crowd of people and some warm lights coming from down the Little Oxford Street alley. It looked arty and cosy so it was inevitable that we would decide to have a peek. It’s somewhat embarrassing that we didn’t know there was a gallery here, let alone that it was opening night for “Wish You Were Here” by exceptionally talented photographer Trevor King. Check out an interview with Trevor over at PagesDigital for a bit more about this exhibition.

The show was a collection of eerie landscapes captured during King’s travels. The space was perfect for the works with the bare brick walls bringing out the warmth and dream-like haze of the works. Drawing towards the end of the night, the crowd was mellow and the atmosphere was perfect. The only downside is the hangover, we’re blaming the Sol…

We can’t tell you where to find the gallery website or when something will be on next, but try and visit this gallery – if the next show is as good as this you won’t want to miss it.

This Little Teapot @ Paper Plane

Jordan Clark

Doors opened slightly late to Paper Plane Gallery in Rozelle and the waiting crowd entered tentatively to find a teapot fantasia! Curator Rebecca Murphy sent each of the artists a teapot which they were to decorate and create a matching artwork. The results were incredible and this exhibition was one of the best group shows we’ve seen – contemporary, imaginative and filled with artists skilled in their respective fields. (We’re sorry about delay in posting this – a lot of things got lost in the haze of the loooong weekend).

UPDATE: We’ve been contacted by a few people and have added artist names to the works. Thanks y’all!

The Fly In My Room – Bryan BB Bastidas @ China Heights

This has also been published on the Art Month Sydney blog, so please head along and check it out there. Otherwise, read on!

Friday was just another balmy night except, finally, and just in time for Art Month, China Heights returned to the fray with its first exhibition of 2011. Who better to start the year than celebrated San Diegan artist, Bryan BB Bastidas, with his retrospective of skateboard art and paintings – The Fly in My Room. We arrived early to snap a few photos, but it wasn’t long before the gallery was full, and steamy.
