a calendar for emerging artist exhibition openings in sydney + a few exhibition reviews

Frontal Lobe Def [The Wall]

when: Opening night Wednesday 28 July 2010, from 8pm.
cost: Free.
where: The Wall @ World Bar,  24 Bayswater Road, Kings Cross.

From The Wall:

WoesOne and Giels Fish are two young artists springing from Sydney‟s underground graffiti scene. Along with their graffiti-fuelled youths came the influence of drugs and alcohol. “Not to glorify this,” says Giels, “but the name of this exhibition, Frontal Lobe Def, derives from the notion that excessive marijuana and various other substance abuse affects and stunts the growth of the frontal lobe.” But instead of causing mental “death”, it has made their style “Def,” a common term used in graffiti to define a wild or extravagant look.

From the couch of Woes’ garage, to the trains and tracks of the greater Sydney region, WoesOne and Giels Fish bring the gritty and raw influence of Sydney‟s graffiti culture to their artworks and into the gallery of The World Bar.

Giels Fish: At only 19 years old, Giels is also a practising tattoo artist and beat-maker. His work has been featured in the publications Dirty Deeds, Clouded Thoughts, Illegal Fame and Street Art of the Inner West.

WoesOne: WoesOne has been writing graffiti in and around sydney for ten years. He’s collaborated with artists from all over Australia and abroad. He’s run various workshops for councils and private organisations, teaching children and intellectually disabled adults about graffiti as an artform. He’s appeared in magazines such as: Straight and Narrow, Illegal Fame, Clouded Thoughts, A Day in the Life among other publications. In the past two years, he’s transferred his art from walls to canvas, and has developed an interest in urban photography, capturing images from the bowels of Sydney.

Pop Rocks – Stupid Crap Group Show [Urban Uprising]

when: Opening night Wednesday 28 July 2010, 6-8:30pm. Exhibition continues until
cost: Free, however keep your eyes on the Urban Uprising Website as there may be an RSVP list.
where: Urban Uprising Gallery, 314 Crown Street, Surry Hills.

From Urban Uprising:

chicks on coke - Ben Frost, limited edition print

For the past five years, Stupidkrap has been cultivating a strong following of art lovers, by providing limited edition prints and artworks by emerging and established urban and outsider artists.

Stupidkrap was co-created by one of Australia’s best known artists, Ben Frost, who has exhibited his work in New York, London, Berlin, Amsterdam, Beijing and Singapore, and was recently exposed to a whole new audience through his appearance on Channel Nine’s Australian version of The Apprentice.

Ben Frost will curate Stupidkrap’s first show at Urban Uprising – POP ROCKS! – including prints and artworks by a long list of established and up and coming artists, such as Dan Baldwin (UK), Numskull, Beastman, Bei Badgirl, Eamo, Max Berry, Philjames, Akina, and many more, as well as Ben’s own work.

POP ROCKS promises to be a short sharp shock to the senses, both visually and mentally stimulating, mixing pop surrealism and iconography with cultural confrontation.

As well as the high quality, collectible prints Stupidkrap is known for, POP ROCKS! will include original artworks, and all will be available to buy.

Ben Frost says,” I wanted to put together an exhibition, that was about colour, vibrancy, and dynamism – all with the varying levels of social criticism. These themes are a common thread in a lot of the work of the street and urban artists practicing today. Being involved in Stupidkrap.com, I’ve worked with nearly all of these artists very closely over the years, and we’ve slowly been launching more and more print editions for them, which has helped in many ways push and promote their careers into both the local and international art markets. This exhibition displays that link between original work and printed editions, and it’s a great way for people to start or continue their art collections – inexpensively and in style.”

Rod Lay from Urban Uprising says Stupidkrap and Urban Uprising not only share a love of street and underground art, but also of supporting emerging Australian artists.

Don’t Tell Nanna… @ Horus & Deloris

when: Opening night Wednesday 28 July 2010, 6-8pm. Exhibition continues until Wednesday 25 August 2010.
cost: Free.
where: Horus & Deloris, Level 2, 102 Pyrmont Street, Pyrmont.

From Horus & Deloris:

Ella Condon

Sarah Contos

We’ve let the place run wild. We’ve cut up the mattresses, burnt out the light globes and remixed the old records but shhh – Don’t tell Nanna!

Join the artists for opening night drinks on Wednesday 28 July, 6-8pm, and discover a space that puts a sassy, contemporary spin on the old saying ‘Home Sweet Home.’

A space for nostalgia, introspection and rebellion. Where objects past their use-by-date are re-imagined, unleashing hallucinatory alter-egos. Where erotic literature and traditional crafts are intertwined. A space in which generational attitudes and stereotypes relating to gender, femininity and domesticity are challenged.

Artworks act as evidence of controversial and confronting acts, questioning established perspectives. Extending beyond the realm of a physical relative, information considered subversive could also be concealed from institutions and individuals representative of ‘Nanna’. Who is protecting who when it comes to secrecy? Have you ever done something you didn’t want to tell Nanna about?

Working together at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney inspired emerging female artists- Ella Condon, Bridie Connell, Sarah Contos, Micaela Giffney, Leahlani Johnson, Bernadette Jones and Nicola Walkerden to collaborate. Let photographic, assemblage, installation, sculptural, textile, video and 2-D works take you on a journey of revelations. After all, what Nanna doesn’t know can’t hurt her… or can it?

Your ticket to ride is only available between 28 July- 25 August 2010 at Horus & Deloris gallery- Sydney, Australia.

About Horus & Deloris:
Horus & Deloris Contemporary Art Space is a new Sydney gallery showcasing young, emerging Australian talent. Nestled on the second floor of the Horus & Deloris building, a four-storey hub of creativity, design and inspiration in the Pyrmont precinct, the gallery injects new life into the Sydney art scene, providing a middle ground for emerging artists who want a professional space to exhibit.

Marc Alperstein + Julian Day + Be Jones + Justin Shoulder [Firstdraft]

when: Opening night Wednesday 28 July 2010, 6-8pm. Exhibition continues until Saturday 15 August 2010.
cost: Free.
where: Firstdraft Gallery, 116 – 118 Chalmers Street, Surry Hills.

From Firstdraft:

Gallery 1 – ‘Into the Fold’
Marc Alperstein
Alperstein’s Into the Fold is an exhibition of works on paper which looks at the way in which we read implied forms/objects. Works are based around a varying amount of patterned material covering a range of objects. In these works the form of the object swings between being somewhat retained or being swallowed up by the material, losing its ability to mark its presence. With the objects abstracted and reduced down, a sense of familiarity occurs whilst building up a new ambiguous form.

Gallery 2 – ‘Ceremony’
Julian Day
‘Ceremony’ is a sound installation for multiple electronic organs. Each instrument emits gentle tones via heavy bolts weighted on the keys, creating a warm envelope of sound that subtly evolves as the sound waves entwine. The keyboards have been collected from households all around the country, a collection of once-loved objects now cheap and willingly divested. ‘Ceremony’ has given birth to an ensemble, An Infinity Room (A.I.R), which performs in various spaces – galleries, shopfronts, concert halls and foyers. A limited edition CD, created especially for this exhibition, is available for sale in the gallery and a performance will take place on the evening of 12 August 2010. Check www.firstdraftgallery.com for details.

Gallery 3 – ‘Urban_ailure’
Be Jones
Ecological urbaninaction. Looking at a stylized version of unfortunate possibility. Through a flattened reality and jimmy-rigged application, merging plant-life, mud, soil and the disintegration of our built environment. Focusing on the possibility of futile collaboration with nature, and degrees of, mimesis, discontent and entropy. The wall reliefs expose a process of disintegration in direct collision with a hand-made build up of base materials, resulting in an eclectic mess of objects and environment. Through various natural and found materials, the work forces us to see the futile and possible demise of our civilization and a pointless attempt to salvage our natural rescores. As a whole, the work highlights a renewed interest in landscape, earth art, still life and nature.

Gallery 4 – ‘I am Raining’
Justin Shoulder
The Fantastic or Composite Creature is a timeless and popular figure in our collective memory. Enlisted by our peculiar species to explain the unexplainable, they persist as the form and symbol of our efforts to control and measure forces outside the human dominion. Chimeras, Monkey Kings, Vampire demons, Serpents and Fire Gods are all examples of Fantastic Creatures that animate our histories and narratives with endless profusion, relevancy and ineluctability. Working with elaborate costumes, Shoulder creates his own ‘Fantastic Creatures’ – alternate identities he articulates in live performance. In I am Raining, Shoulder has employed photography, costume, sound and performance to explore themes of ecology, mourning, impermanence and metamorphosis.
