My Word! [Gallery9]

when: Wednesday 2 June. 6pm-8pm. Continues til 19 June.
cost: free.
where: Gallery 9. 9 Darley St, Darlinghurst.

from Gallery 9 and Jelle van den Berg…

This solo exhibition at Gallery 9, consists of five suites of watercolour paintings by Jelle van den Berg. For Jelle, “watercolour is the most versatile of all media in painting and by far the most direct. The more the world goes into digital imagery the more I withdraw…”

The title of the show is taken from the small studies of four-letter words that form the MY WORD! series. Jelle explains: “It’s so easy to name things but after that it is complex to explain what the watercolours are about, however as a rule they are improvisations on a theme. A good single word makes me deaf to the rest of the story. It is like a poem, it reverberates, it pushes itself out of the frame.”

Born in The Netherlands, Jelle van den Berg has worked in artist collectives since 1974. Involvement in collectives often spilled over into running artist-run spaces and after Jelle moved to Sydney in 1983, he was one of the co-directors of Union Street Gallery. Jelle currently lives in Coledale, NSW and he is Painting Coordinator at the Faculty of Creative Arts, University of Wollongong.

Jelle van den Berg is represented by Gallery 9 in Sydney and Galerie Hoogenbosch in The Netherlands.

Stranger Than Kindness – Beth Josey vs. Six Wolves [Gaffa]

when: Opening night Thursday 3 June 2010, 6-8pm. Exhibition continues until Wednesday 19 June 2010.
cost: Free.
where: Gaffa Gallery, 281 Clarence Street, Sydney.

From Six Wolves:

Six Wolves is proud to present “Stranger Than Kindness” a new collection of works by artist Beth Josey, curated by Six Wolves.

The title “Stranger than Kindness” is not an everyday phrase, however, kindness is no longer an everyday happening. Josey has produced a collection of works that much like the kindness of a stranger are not part of our everyday world. These paintings do not convey the everyday thoughts of the everyday person. Josey shifts us all from our familiar, safe places to a confronting, mysterious underworld.

“Stranger than Kindness documents a world of scattered thoughts, disturbing dreams, and hallucinations of fears that we usually hide from each other and even ourselves.”

A sense of gothic obscurity is achieved throughout this series of work, with Josey’s use of classic mediums of oils, acrylic and ink. With a blend of portraiture and surrealism, Beth has created a gothic aesthetic, exploring the fragmented nature of the individual and the contradictions inherent in all people.

Kristen Perich and Adam Browne have developed Six Wolves, a creative agency Six Wolves has fast become a staple part of the Sydney production and casting scene for both the fashion and art industries.

“Stranger Than Kindness” is an invitation to a collection that is admittedly strange, but no stranger than kindness.

Running with Mandalas [China Heights]

when: Friday 4 June. 630pm-730pm.
cost: free.
where: China Heights Gallery. L3 16-28 Foster St, Surry Hills.

See the event on FB.

from China Heights Gallery…

China Heights is proud to present ‘Running With Mandalas’ by Tony Burgess. Inspired by the symmetrical harmony and kaleidoscopic character of traditional Mandala art. The show features a series of works, where designs emerge from the combination of circles and straight lines – created on shade cloth screens and paper, using silicon sealant and gel pens.

Born in Sydney in 1952, Tony worked as a landscaper for many years, embracing art more heavily upon the breakdown of his marriage. Over time, art became less about appearing sane and more about letting go – a vehicle in the search for equanimity.

‘Running With Mandalas’ is a presentation of the capacity of the kaleidoscopes of our youths, to provoke wonder. There seems to be a natural resonance evoked between symmetry and quasi- geometric shapes, something like a pulse. Engaged by the apparent simplicity, combinations form as the eye is drawn in and out. Each design being, to some extent different, the show illustrates the evolution of the artist and the seemingly endless variations around the Mandala theme.

“Artists and creative workers are well represented among our investors and superannuation members, and tend to take a keen interest in ethical investment. We look forward to seeing how they can represent ethical issues in their art work”.

Last year Australian Ethical Art Prize received 40 entries from across Australia. Previous winners of the Art Prize include Isabella Mackay in 2007 with her work Respect your elders and Amanda Seddon in 2008 with her piece Breathe.
