Born Against – Spider Death + Lauren Lau @ China Heights

After a week of rain the sun was shining on Friday afternoon last week. We got out of the house and off to visit our old pal China Heights. Born Against had been on our radar for a while and we weren’t about to miss the opening.

Lauren Lau and Spider Death are a gorgeous and talented couple. In their first exhibition they have put on display a collection of works that display their love of art and of the tattoo subculture they are so proudly a part of.

Spider Death’s collection of watercolour and ink illustrations were expressive and intricate. They explored symbolism from spirituality and the occult, as well as familiar tattoo imagery.

Lauren Lau’s oil paintings showed a clear evolution in her technique and influences. Her anatomical works were  gory and somewhat less polished than her beautiful portraits of tattooed friends, including Spider Death who could be spotted in the audience. We would guess she’s a big fan of some of the amazing painters in the American tattoo scene including Shawn Barber and Henry Lewis.

The show will run until Saturday the 17th of March. Check it out if you’re in need of an art fix this week, it’s damn good.
