Dice III & IV - Vilma Bader, 2009

Featuring: Vilma Bader, Kevin Chin, Greg Hodge and Chloe Vallance.

In +/-(Positive/Negative) four shape-shifting artists engage and play with ideas of real and imagined place and positive and negative space. The works bring together a miscellany of images, shapes and forms, a slew of ambiguous and ambivalent spatial propositions and notions of absence and presence in a cryptic push-me-pull-you dialogue.

Artists share with mathematicians a curiosity about the physical world and both approach its description in speculative terms, exploring ‘the spaces between’ and a diversity of parallel realities.

Maggie Aydin [Plump]

when: Opening night Wednesday 6 October 2010, from 6pm. Exhibition continues until Wednesday 20 October 2010.
cost: Free.
where: Plump Gallery, 240 Enmore Road, Enmore.

From Plump:

Paintings and drawings that make your gut think hard & your mind feel deeply. A different take on Abstract Art, it’s very personal & the colors scream off the canvas in a way that makes you look.

This is Maggie Aydin’s first solo show and it will be more full of life than a farm yard in Spring. Her work has both an intensity & an almost calm knowing of it’s self. Her paintings fuck your senses by an oily fire place. Her drawings place her in the pornographic scenes that soak our understanding of what women are, of how they are looked upon.

If you have ever worked under a manager, ever been judged or had a cunt you need to see her work using text. You all need to see it either way. The work is conflicted and young, just like you are or once was.

Open Tuesday – Sunday, 11am-6pm

NY/LA – Josh Robenstone [China Heights]

when: Opening night Friday 1 October 2010, 6-9pm. Exhibition continues until Sunday 3 October 2010.
cost: Free.
where: China Heights Gallery, Level 3, 16-28 Foster Street, Surry Hills.

From China Heights:

During the first week of October, China Heights is excited to present ‘NY/LA and other American Adventures’ – a visual contrast between America’s two largest cities that looks beneath the surface of American society.

Shot by Melbourne-based photographer, Josh Robenstone, ‘NY/LA and other American Adventures’ is a retrospective journey and a portrait of contemporary America, telling a story that is both fact and fiction. This abstract portrayal of the American way of life weaves together day to day experiences and encounters that span two decades.

LA’s gaping wide roads, which almost mock miniature footpaths, confirm the dominance of the motor vehicle. The city is shrouded in smog, but the bright sunshine makes you forget. In New York, a different pace and feeling. A city of people and interaction. Faces all day on the crowded footpaths, vibrant and engaged. ‘NY/LA and other American Adventures’ is a comparative study of America’s two distinct cities, acknowledging a desire to understand American society, and look further into the offbeat.
