From Hardware Gallery:
Patterns of Behaviour is Sydney artist Jessica Geron’s latest solo exhibition and represents the culmination of several years work. Combining imagery from all forms of popular culture and recontextualising them in her paintings, Geron fluently and cleverly creates colourful worlds that engage the viewer in a dialogue about relationships: both visual and conceptual. Geron explores the effects of the surface in her oil on canvas works with carefully rough impasto techniques and an often whimsical analysis of space and perspective. The result is bright, visually engaging works that subtly explore the relationships between the subjects of her work.

from UTS Gallery:
Driven by developments in digital fabrication, today’s graphic designers are utilising unconventional materials and technologies to push the boundaries of their discipline. From robotic drawing machines, spot-welded posters to visuals that grow over time, Graphic Material explores this freedom through new and innovative works by local and international designers.

The hybrid practices featured in the exhibition will attract audiences across contemporary design, art and technology fields and be further explored in the accompanying public program. The lines between design disciplines, so long conceptualised in terms of their material output, are becoming increasingly blurred. The exhibition is an exploration of graphic design when freed from the constraints of paper and ink.

Capture the Fade Photo Competition – due 30 August

when: submissions due by Monday 30 August 2010.
cost: free.

from Ampersand Magazine:
In lieu of the release of Ampersand’s third issue this Spring, the Sydney-based curiosity journal is holding its first annual photography competition. Editors are particularly thrilled to have Australian photographic legend and Ampersand fan Bill

Henson on board as the competition’s guest judge.

With interest in submissions from professionals and amateurs alike, and work that transgresses the boundaries of the photographic medium, Ampersand is looking for innovative, evocative, humourous and thoughtful reponses to the theme, The Fade.

Submissions may or may not be landscapes, portraits, still lifes, wedding photography, glamour shots, theatrical scenes, wildlife, commercial food or product photography, fashion photography, paparazzi or photojournalism. They may or may

not be spontaneous or staged. They may or may not be natural, digitally augmented or play with the medium.

All submissions will appear on the Capture The Fade blog as they are submitted. Mr Henson’s 16 chosen winners will be exhibited at the Capture The Fade exhibition in early September and published in Ampersand # 3 – The Fade. The overall winner will also be profiled in that issue.

Ampersand Magazine explores creativity, societal change and the human condition through multiple disciplines. It is interested in the discussion of the unfashionable, unorthodox, illuminating or rare. Ampersand is sold in all major galleries and independent bookstores across Australia and overseas. Contributors include Christos Tsiolkas, Lisa Pryor, Erik Kessels, Peter Combe, Bob Log III, the Suitcase Royale, and a range of Australia’s most prodigious young thinkers.
