actingUP: a showcase of performance based & inspired art

Growing out of the avant-garde and conceptual art of the 1960s, performance in visual art – performance art – now more-than-ever is being utilised by artists in communicating and developing their ideas across a number of mediums, platforms and places.

Performance based and inspired visual art stretches across the gamut of emotions, sensations and affect. From the intimate, to the gestural, the manic to the meditative, it can take place anywhere, anytime – lasting seconds, minutes, hours, days, months, and sometimes even years.

From the artist as performer, to the audience as performer, performance based and performance inspired contemporary visual art often challenges audiences to think in new and unconventional ways about art, self, culture and the world around them.

actingUP offers a diverse smorgasbord of performance treats; from the live to the documentary, the abject to the interactive, the critical to the comedic. Featuring 15 local, interstate and international individual and collaborative artists, the performance based and inspired art of actingUP draws upon such disciplines as sound art, theatre, painting, drawing, video, documentary, photography, and, critical & conceptual discourses.

List of Artists: Alexandra Unger (UK), Ana Nusdorfer Carter, Cuntstruct (VIC), Goran Tomic, Hayley Hill, Irnin Khan, Jan Cornall, Jeffrey Hamilton, mark dahl (CAN), Marya Elimelakh, Michelle Cox, Pineapple Park, SandS through the hourglass, Susannah Williams, The Academy of Emergency Art – Sydney.

Forecast – Carmel Byrne [Kudos]

when: Opening night Tuesday 13 July 2010, 5-7:30pm. Exhibition continues until Saturday 17 July 2010.
cost: Free.
where: Kudos Gallery, 6 Napier Street, Paddington.

From Kudos:

Landscape and maps are a rich source for metaphor yet the perception of maps as Cartesian representations of the grid include all the implications associated with power, ownership and colonisation. For this series of paintings the perspective is raised to the space above land where climate and weather shape it.

Tha Artistic Eye [Changeable Art]

when: Event takes place Saturday 10 July 2010, 10am – 3pm.
cost: Free.
where: Changeable Art, 22

0 Miller Street, North Sydney.

From Changeable Art:

Daily life, people and places inspire us to create images but it is what we do with those images that forms beauty and balance. ‘The artistic eye’ is a bold exhibition exploring the endless possibilities of the imagination and how artists can create beauty using so many different mediums. Four artists use different artistic expressions in print making, photography, drawing and painting to create conspicuously beautiful images.

These explorations capture the visual language of a dancer’s movement, the organic flow of nature to simple elongated shapes mixing various designs, textures and colours, creating harmonious pieces with a whimsical naïve feel.

‘The Artistic Eye’ is rich in colours and tones juxtaposed to dramatic black and white photographic imagery. This exhibition is an experience not to be missed.

A FREE event held on Saturday, 10th July 10am – 3pm along with live music, free entertainment and the well loved North Sydney Markets
