China Heights is proud to present ‘Running With Mandalas’ by Tony Burgess. Inspired by the symmetrical harmony and kaleidoscopic character of traditional Mandala art. The show features a series of works, where designs emerge from the combination of circles and straight lines – created on shade cloth screens and paper, using silicon sealant and gel pens.

Born in Sydney in 1952, Tony worked as a landscaper for many years, embracing art more heavily upon the breakdown of his marriage. Over time, art became less about appearing sane and more about letting go – a vehicle in the search for equanimity.

‘Running With Mandalas’ is a presentation of the capacity of the kaleidoscopes of our youths, to provoke wonder. There seems to be a natural resonance evoked between symmetry and quasi- geometric shapes, something like a pulse. Engaged by the apparent simplicity, combinations form as the eye is drawn in and out. Each design being, to some extent different, the show illustrates the evolution of the artist and the seemingly endless variations around the Mandala theme.
