from Gallery 9 and Jelle van den Berg…

This solo exhibition at Gallery 9, consists of five suites of watercolour paintings by Jelle van den Berg. For Jelle, “watercolour is the most versatile of all media in painting and by far the most direct. The more the world goes into digital imagery the more I withdraw…”

The title of the show is taken from the small studies of four-letter words that form the MY WORD! series. Jelle explains: “It’s so easy to name things but after that it is complex to explain what the watercolours are about, however as a rule they are improvisations on a theme. A good single word makes me deaf to the rest of the story. It is like a poem, it reverberates, it pushes itself out of the frame.”

Born in The Netherlands, Jelle van den Berg has worked in artist collectives since 1974. Involvement in collectives often spilled over into running artist-run spaces and after Jelle moved to Sydney in 1983, he was one of the co-directors of Union Street Gallery. Jelle currently lives in Coledale, NSW and he is Painting Coordinator at the Faculty of Creative Arts, University of Wollongong.

Jelle van den Berg is represented by Gallery 9 in Sydney and Galerie Hoogenbosch in The Netherlands.
